Why WordPress

When you are after a Content Management System (CMS) platform for your website, there’s quite a few options available to you. Webmasters that wonder “Why WordPress?” certainly have a valid question. Other CMS platforms like Drupal, Joomla, Adobe Business Catalyst or Plone are definitely good alternatives to WordPress. However WordPress is still one of the largest and most popular CMS platforms, and that simple fact makes it an easy choice if you are wondering “Why WordPress?”

If you have stumbled onto this page, there can be a few reasons for this. Either you’ve been instructed by your boss to find a low cost website solution, or you want to start a blog on a budget. You may be in a job where you want to venture out and start your own business because you think it’s time to try your own hand at an online company. Or you are just plain curious about what WordPress is, how it works and why it’s so popular.

why wordpress

Whatever the reason, Wordpress is an excellent choice because it’s open source, which makes it free. WordPress is also extremely popular which means that free plugins and features are being developed daily, which makes it highly robust and flexible.

I’ve been involved with WordPress since my first install 7 years ago, when it was nowhere near the powerful machine it is today. I’ve seen it grow from the crude content system that resembled a word processor, to powering millions of websites online. Since then I have helped thousands of customers get their brick and mortar business online, and created new websites for entrepreneurs.

Want proof of why wordpress is so powerful and popular? The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom uses WordPress to power his own blog, showing just how powerful and secure the system truly is. If you are on the fence and want to know why WordPress is so powerful, check out some of the important points below.

Powerful

It may seem like a simple content management system, but in reality there’s over 2000 files involved in any one single WordPress installation. This number is overwhelming for the majority of WordPress webmasters who have never used or edited an HTML file or a CSS stylesheet.

Simple

Even though WordPress has a multitude of files that are used at any one time, the good news is it’s incredibly simple to manage. Even with over 2000 files in a WordPress website, the fact is you can manage and run a popular WordPress website without ever changing a single line of code. Even if you fancy yourself a decent HTML  or code ninja, you’ll only edit around 20 of those files ever.

Free to Use

Like all open source software, WordPress is free to use and try. In fact if you don’t have your own personal host or web hosting service, you can even sign up for a free WordPress website at WordPress.org.  This is a free hosting service provided by WordPress and a perfect way to get your feet wet if you are wondering why WordPress? Although it’s free, it’s also rather limited in what you can do and what you can customize.

WordPress.com is a dedicated hub where you can sign up for various WP services. Plugins like Jetpack and Askimet require your own WordPress.com account. Sometimes this can cause some confusion for people who don’t know the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.
